I found all nine elements of Digital Citizenship to be very interesting. With such a technolgy based world often times I don't think of all that goes into being a good Digital Citizen while online.
ONE AREA OF WEAKNESS:
I would have to say that my weakness is Digital Etiquette. As a professional I have the power to make the Internet better for myself and for others. It is the same as following the Golden Rule, "treat others as you would want to be treated." That means that I can remember that context is everything, choose a respectable screen name, double check things before I hit send, and to never keep things a secret that may be offensive, compromise privacy, or stir up drama. These simple rules can be carried over into my classroom when we disucss healthy relationships and setting boudaries and limits.
With my 6th graders, I teach a lesson on Internet Safety. As a group, we discuss the benefits of the Internet and the drawbacks to the Internet. The students view a video on Internet Safety that focuses on:
◦Chat rooms
◦Predators
◦Cyberbullying
◦Pictures/Posts
◦Theft of personal information
◦Spamming
The students are aware that their digital foot print is forever and things that they post online or send via text is forever.
CLASSROOM ACTIVITY:
As a follow up to the discussion and video I created a crossword puzzle on Internet Safety to check for understanding of the material covered. The crossword puzzle includes clues on all of the safety concerns listed above as well as how to keep yourself safe while online. The crossword puzzle goes over very well. There are graphics included on the worksheet (puzzle) that includes cell phones, laptops, and cameras. The students enjoy working collaboratively to fill in theirr puzzle and looking at the images.
